Broward County Birth and Death
certificates can only be issued in the state of Florida to the child
named on the certificate over 18 years of age, or the parent, guardian
or legal representative of the person named on the certificate, or by
court order. Applicants must provide a valid picture ID or an
enlarged and lightened copy of their photo ID if ordering by mail, as
well as their full name, relationship to the person named on the
certificate, mailing address, phone number where they can be reached
during business hours, and signature. Legal guardians should
include notarized guardianship documents.
Birth records from 1930 to the
present are available. A computer generated copy of a birth
certificate with the embossed Seal of Florida is $9 and is accepted as
proof of birth and citizenship by all state and federal agencies.
A photocopy certification of the registered birth is $14.
Birth certificates for Broward County
may be obtained at the Broward County Health Department Vital
Statistics Office at 2421 S. W. 6th Avenue, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida
(mailing address - 780 S. W. 24th Street, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33315).
Anyone may order a Florida death
certificate. However, by Florida law, the cause of death is
confidential for 50 years following the death. "Cause of Death"
information can only be issued to the decedent's spouse, parent, child
of legal age, grandchild, sibling, any person who provides a will,
insurance policy or other document that demonstrates their interest in
the estate of the decedent, any person who can provide documentation
that they are acting on behalf of the decedent's immediate family
members, or by court order. Cause of Death information does
become public information 50 years after the death.
To obtain a certified copy of any
marriage license issued by the Broward County Clerk of Courts from
1915 to the present, you may go to 515 South West Second Avenue, Fort
Lauderdale, Florida (approximately four blocks west of the main
courthouse) in person.
Required information includes the
name of the groom, the name of the bride at the time of application,
and the date of the marriage. Copies are $4 for the first copy
and $2.50 for each additional copy.
In order to obtain a copy through the
mail, send the necessary information to the Archives Division, 515
S.W. 2nd Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33301-2813 and include a check
payable to the Clerk of Courts in the appropriate amount as well as a
stamped self-addressed business envelope, allowing two weeks for
